A log cabin of one's own...the dream of every American woodsman. These three classic volumes will get you started with some great ideas on how to approach the planning, design and construction of an actual cabin.

Cabin Plans Book This perennial, now public-domain classic 68 pages long, is packed with practical tips and beautiful, clear illustrations. I think the below description from the book jacket is the best introduction:

Here are a thousand and one sparkling ideas, collected over a ten year period from hundreds of cabin fans, and carefully checked, revised and condensed into this single volume.

How-to-do-it drawings show you every step of cabin construction from selection of the proper site to the laying of the last brick of the chimney top. There are thirty pages of floor plans and exterior elevation from which you may choose the entire cabin or select a detail here and a detail there, to combine into a vacation home of your own planning. In addition, there are many unique interior ideas you will certainly want to incorporate in your cabin.

Log Cabins and Cottages : How to Build and Furnish Them This book is a bit more esoteric than the above title. It spends a small amount of time on various construction tips & details, then the remaining 40 plus pages are beautiful ink line drawings of various cabin designs. These vary from lodge-like giants to small one room cabins. Most also have a rather small floor plan sketch too, but the details on these floor plans are a bit lacking compared to most. This title is more of an idea book tha will allow you to better think about the type of features or design elements you want in a cabin, as well as help you define the style...be it plains simplicity or Old NewEngland rustic.

BONUS: How to Sharpen This is a short promotional booklet by Behr-Manning (a Division of Norton) that teaches the basics of sharpening theory and practice. First created in 1912, this is the thirty-third edition from 1955 so the lessons are refined and accurate. Learn the importance of bevel vs. edge angles, stone selection, lubrication, and sharpening techniques for tools like scapers, bevels, planes, gouges, screwdrivers, garden tools, etc. All manner of knifes, and of course the hatchet / woodmans axe, plus many more
